EcoC-IC oven – for targeted use of heat
Bietigheim-Bissingen, September 2014 – Car body drying is an important step in automotive painting. Lightweight designs, the combination of several materials, and different mass distribution in automotive construction pose new challenges. Heat must be carefully targeted to ensure that the car body is heated evenly – to suit the body's shape and material thickness, thus avoiding the overheating of thinner body parts. For this purpose, Dürr has developed the EcoC-IC oven concept for optimized processes and ease of maintenance.
The abbreviation C-IC stands for Convection with Integrated Conveyor. This means the C-IC oven consists of individual, compact oven modules with the roller bed integrated into the floor. Apart from the drives, which are positioned outside the oven housing, all conveyor elements are installed below the base plate in this space-saving design. This reduces the cross-section of the oven and therefore the heat lost to the environment.
The car body can be heated in a targeted way by being transported quickly, in stop-and-go mode, from one air nozzle field to the next by individual conveyor drives. And this is where a further key feature of the compact design comes into play. It is possible, if required, to integrate floor ducts into the oven floor – within the conveyor system. These ducts contain air nozzles which can be distributed along the entire width of the workspace, thus drying the car body effectively even from below. That way, Dürr can ensure that the entire car body is heated in a controlled way.
When optimizing the system, Dürr focused not only on the drying process but also on other areas ranging from installation to maintenance. The modular design of the EcoC-IC allows a high degree of pre-installation. As the conveyor and oven tunnel form a pre-mounted mechanical and electrical unit, the installation work required on site is considerably reduced compared to conventional ovens. The mounted roller bearings are maintenance-free, drive and chain can be accessed outside the oven, and the chain itself requires no maintenance or lubrication. Thanks to the closed design of the conveyor system, no dirt can get from the conveyors into the oven, and the smooth surfaces of the EcoC-IC are easy to clean.
This oven provides an optimum heating process for the car body. It therefore keeps up with the latest developments in body construction and meets the demands placed on oven technology. The EcoC-IC is already used in the production of passenger cars and commercial vehicles in four paint shops on two continents.
