Scania continues to rely on powder paint and Dürr as a partner

New primer line for complex painting process

Oskarshamn, April 2014 – To expand its production capacity, Scania is commissioning a new primer line at its facilities in Oskarshamn, Sweden. Thanks to the good properties of powder coating and the positive experience with this painting process in its existing plants, the commercial vehicle manufacturer decided to continue using this technology – for it’s new primer line where both the present and the future truck cab generation will be produced. Dürr received the order for this project, as the mechanical and plant engineering firm remains an expert in powder coating.

Although aircraft manufacturers now primarily use liquid paint, powder offers a number of advantages. Containing 100 % of solid matter, it is completely emission-free and provides a very high degree of overall efficiency of 98 % due the almost complete use of overspray. This, together with paint booth air recirculation, contributes to a very positive eco-balance.

Scania has been using powder for painting truck cabs in Oskarshamn since 1995. The excellent corrosion protection and mechanical resistance of powder applied to galvanized, pretreated sheet metal dispenses with the need for the commonly used cathodic dip coating method.

Dürr had already replaced parts of the original application system and the material supply back in 2005 and 2007, which considerably improved the transfer efficiency and reliability of the system. The plant engineering firm is pleased that, following the bid, Scania decided to choose Dürr also for the construction of the new primer line. This was to ensure that it benefited not only from Dürr‘s proven application products but also from its experience with other large-scale powder projects.

Dürr has a long-standing relationship with the Swedish commercial vehicle manufacturer, for example through the construction of a paint shop in Meppel. This is where all plastic truck cab add-ons are painted.

In Oskarshamn, due to the high degree of complexity of painting truck cabs, the robots were arranged at different heights, with and without traveling axis. To paint the underbody, the truck cab is lifted without a skid. This is followed by three zones for painting the interior, exterior and door sills. The line ends with a monitoring/manual painting zone.

The powder is applied to the exterior surfaces using the extremely effective EcoBell2 high-speed rotating atomizers, while the interior surfaces are painted with guns. The powder is delivered using the energy-efficient EcoPump Powder metering pumps. Together with the EcoBell2 powder atomizers, they provide a high degree of transfer efficiency. Scania also relies on Dürr's proven technology when it comes to material supply.

The primer line will be installed in a new building while the pretreatment line stays in the existing one. The new line will be connected while keeping the existing primer line up and running. After the curing process, the truck cabs are ready for further production stages in the existing building.

The plant was installed and commissioned in March 2014, and the first truck cabs are due to be painted from June onwards. Final acceptance by Scania is scheduled for late November.
