Dürr is on the right track in Russia
Yekaterinburg, December, 2015 – Ural Locomotives, a joint venture between the Russian railway vehicle manufacturer Sinara und Siemens, builds railway vehicles for Russian Railways at the Yekaterinburg factory. And German-based plant engineering group Dürr makes the trains shine with a hard-wearing paint coat using an energy-saving combination of painting and drying in the same booth.
This project benefits from Dürr's wealth of experience in automotive painting. The larger dimensions of a railway vehicles are nothing new for the company, which already has experience in the commercial vehicle sector and, above all, in the painting of aircraft wings and fuselage shells.
The special feature in this painting process is not only the use of environmentally friendly water-based paint but also the combination of painting and drying in the same booth, with drying temperatures reaching 80 °C. The specially developed zone ventilation creates an energy-saving process whereby targeted ventilation is only provided to the zones which are currently being used.
Stable painting process under extreme conditions
One of the key factors for these over-sized paint booths is to ensure the provision of uniform air flow. For this purpose Dürr installed systems for air-conditioning supply air. They stabilize the painting process even in the extreme temperatures of the Yekaterinburg site at the south-eastern tip of the Ural Mountains.
The first booths were commissioned in December 2013: three spray booths and one sanding and putty booth. More recently, Dürr has installed and commissioned three further spray booths.
The paint is applied manually. Each booth has platforms including specially adapted electrical driven lifting tables for ergonomic working.
Dürr has been active in the Russian market for 38 years. Its Moscow subsidiary, set up in 2007, as well as service antennas in St. Petersburg and Kaluga give the plant engineering firm flexibility in responding to the requirements of local customers. Its presence in Russia facilitates Dürr's position as general contractor in terms of government requirements such as customs clearance. Dürr has been complying with Russia's GOST standards as a matter of course for years.
