“Dürr´s focus is on increasing our customers’ production efficiency”
São Paulo, December 2014 – Dürr Brasil was established 50 years ago as Dürr’s first foreign subsidiary. Today the Group is represented in 28 countries. In the following interview Ralf W. Dieter, CEO of the Dürr Group, and Roberto Tkatchuk, Head of Dürr Brasil, explain how their customers benefit from the worldwide cooperation within the Dürr Group and what important role service plays in the company.
First a general question: The Brazilian automotive industry is one of the important ones in the world. How do you evaluate the current situation?
Dieter: The Brazilian market has always had its ups and downs. But if you take the years from 2005 to 2014 as an example you will see that automotive production grew by 7% on average. Of course, in the current year production has dropped, but this is temporary. From 2014 to 2018 analysts expect light vehicle production in Brazil to grow again by 6% a year on average.
How is Dürr Brasil prepared for this expected growth?
Dieter: We invested significantly in 2012 and 2013. We expanded our business location in São Paulo, hired new staff and built up additional competences and skills. In terms of technology, Dürr Brasil has access to the latest innovations in the Dürr Group. The focus of Dürr´s innovation efforts is on increasing our customers’ production efficiency, for example by reducing material and energy consumption and increasing automation and flexibility.
What business strategy does Dürr have to reach its goals?
Dieter: Dürr´s corporate strategy is to grow and create value with a four-pronged approach: innovation, globalizing our business, delivering best-in-class-service to our customers and continually improving our internal processes. Our focus is on the customer in everything we do: What is the customer’s situation? What does he need? And how can we support him best in increasing his production efficiency? These are the questions every Dürr employee has to ask himself on a daily basis. Of course, our employees get a lot of training to be prepared for their job in the best possible way.
How do your customers benefit from Dürr Brasil’s integration into the international Dürr network?
Tkatchuk: We are able to deliver more efficiency in terms of order execution! When we build a paint shop, for example, we can draw on the know-how of Dürr experts from many countries. The Group has global business processes and IT structures. We can thus count on the support from other business locations around the world when required. Dürr’s products can also be used worldwide. As a result, our customers receive tried-and-tested solutions which are tailored to their requirements on site. Here in Brazil we have a wide range of different customers from all over the world. If, for example, a customer from Germany plans a project in Brazil we can cooperate with our German colleagues in order to fully understand the customer and develop the best possible solution for him.
Compared to the past, how would you describe Dürr today?
Dieter: Dürr has always been a flexible company that has managed to adapt to market changes, especially in Brazil. Moreover, innovation and advanced technologies are part of Dürr´s DNA. During the last ten years, the group has improved its worldwide presence, particularly in the emerging markets. And we have become a truly global company. Our locations in different countries collaborate and support each other as a team.
And what role does service play?
Tkatchuk: We are expanding our service range as part of the “Dürr 2017” Group strategy. After all, the start of production is only the start. Customers want their production to be 100% efficient, and it is our job to support them in this, for example by ensuring fast spare parts delivery and response times or providing proactive consulting. In addition, we offer local operator training for which we have just installed new training facilities in São Paulo, for example in the area of glueing technology. Smaller plant conversions are also very important. These are carried out with surgical precision and immediate availability, even when schedules are tight.
