Stricter emission standards in China: international Dürr project team supports car manufacturers

Shanghai, July 2016 – Several provincial governments have already imposed stricter terms, others will follow suit. Car manufacturers in China are facing stricter emission standards at many production sites. The result: paint shops often have to be retrofitted with exhaust-air purification systems. Analyzing, consulting, planning and finally executing – Dürr's Clean Technology Systems division has formed a special project team called "WAVE". It has been dealing with the situation in China since 2014 and providing competent support to customers there.

WAVE team leader Magnus Morsch describes the process that follows when enquiries are received: "Together with our customers' planning departments we often start by analyzing the present state of the paint shop. We calculate the current emissions with the help of measurements or material balances. Based on this data and information, we try to find the best, i.e. the most economical, solution to meet the required emission limits."

Combined expertise at Dürr

It is not always necessary to clean all the exhaust air. Sometimes it is sufficient to modify the booths or exhaust-air ducts to make the exhaust-air purification system more efficient. Here the team can draw on the expertise of Dürr's Paint and Final Assembly Systems division, responsible for paint shops and final assembly systems. Finally, it must be checked where the exhaust-air purification system with a size of up to 1,000 m² can be positioned, and how to channel the exhaust air from the booths to the system – this is often a challenge due to the confined space.

The WAVE core team consists of a total of eight Chinese and German employees from sales, product management, construction and project planning. It is expanded when projects are implemented. "We benefit particularly from our Chinese team members, who provide information competently and without any language barriers", says Magnus Morsch.

The WAVE project team has so far been involved in the sale of eleven exhaust-air purification systems in China. The first commissioning and handover took place in May 2016 at SAIC Volkswagen (SVW) in Nanjing. Further projects are currently in progress.

When designing new paint shops, future emission requirements can be taken into account, whereas upgrading brownfield projects is much more complicated. Many competitors who are new to the market lack the experience required for this. "We look at the entire process and know where we can optimize", the head of sales points out. "And all of our key components, such as the tried-and-tested TARCOM burners, are made in Europe.

"The topic of stricter emission limits primarily concerns the automotive industry at present. However, there is evidence that the changes will also become relevant for other sectors such as the chemical or coating industries. "Dürr will provide expert support to all sectors", announces Magnus Morsch.
