Machine duo impresses in the workshop
Darmstadt, July 2016 – The two Schenck RoTec monoblock balancing machines, TBcomfort and TBsonio, are at the center of the machine park of ATC-TurboTechnik. The company uses the TBcomfort for the low-speed preliminary balancing of turbine rotors and compressor wheels, while the TBsonio handles the high-speed balancing of the fully assembled core assemblies. Thanks to its high degree of measuring accuracy and its easy operation with just a few tools, the balancing process takes less than half an hour.
ATC-TurboTechnik in Hanover is a German automotive repair workshop specializing in turbocharger repair. The company ensures a quality standard, whereby a repaired turbocharger must be as good as a new one. "For us, high process reliability and measuring accuracy are therefore crucial in the balancing process", says the Managing Director of ATC, Sebastian Lew. With these requirements in mind, his search for a suitable balancing machine took him to Schenck RoTec, where experts introduced him to the dual solution of the TBcomfort/TBsonio. After an on-site visit, where Lew experienced the efficiency and accuracy of the two machines and saw how easy they are to operate, it was clear to him that the machine duo was the ideal solution.
TBcomfort for the components
The TBcomfort is used to balance turbocharger components and rotor assemblies weighing up to 16 kg. The machine is consistently designed for fast, efficient operation. The operator saves time, not least due to the machine's permanent calibration, dispensing with the need for separate calibration runs. All that is required to set up the machine is to enter the geometric data of the turbine rotor or compressor wheel in the measuring unit, and the balancing process can begin. The rotor is placed in the machine with a convenient one-hand overslung belt drive assembly. All operating elements are easily accessible. Thanks to its intuitive menus and software interface, the measuring unit is extremely user-friendly.
In the daily work of ATC-Turbotechnik, the high level of accuracy of the TBcomfort ensures that a single measuring run and correction step are usually sufficient to balance a turbine rotor or compressor wheel. Balancing the most important turbocharger components thus becomes a highly efficient process.
TBsonio for the complete core assembly
Once the cleaned components and balanced spare parts have been re-assembled, the repaired core assembly must be balanced under realistic conditions. This is a highly complex task, for which the TBsonio is used. A sophisticated measuring concept is needed to handle the elastic behavior of the rotors, their high balancing speeds, and the required accuracy. The measuring unit of the TBsonio therefore measures the vibration behavior across the entire speed range and then calculates the exact weight required for the unbalance correction. The result is a turbocharger with extremely low vibration.
The TBsonio uses the same high-precision measuring technology as the large Schenck RoTec production machines. This ensures the smallest achievable residual unbalance of just 0.050 gmm (grams per millimeter of radius). The simplicity of its software design is similar to that of the TBcomfort, where the operator also controls all features via a touchscreen.
