Efficiency results in sustainability
May 2012 – Manfred Weil has been Head of Dürr’s Paint and Final Assembly business unit since 2010.
Mr. Weil, the theme for the Dürr Open House was “Production Efficiency for Your Advantage”. How does this relate to Eco+Paintshop?
Dürr is working on and developing products on the basis of an Eco+Efficiency System. In doing so we want to draw attention to the fact that consideration of commercial and ecological aspects leads directly to increases in efficiency. This is expressed in our slogan for the event: all our efforts are aimed at bringing customer benefits. For us efficiency means bringing not only process improvements and greater flexibility but also saving energy, materials and space – which brings us straight to Eco+Paintshop, our idea of the sustainable paint shop.
But paint shops are very complex; how do you approach the task?
There are lots of ways. One is about material balances – determining how much energy, water, paint and materials go into a factory and how much CO2, solvent, waste water and waste leave it? Then we examine the interfaces – where can I simplify, link or improve processes? This is where a lot of know-how is needed. The third approach is one of incorporating high performance products. In recent years we have achieved a great deal in this field with EcoDryScrubber for dry separation, for example, or through the EcoBell3 rotating atomizer.
What new products are being incorporated in Eco+Paintshop?
We have developed a new modular paint booth concept: EcoReBooth. Here our emphasis lies on effective air recirculation, space requirements and energy efficiency. In addition the utilization in oven heating of solar energy and cogenerated heat and power represents a big step towards even more energy efficiency. This is complemented by products such as the new EcoRP L153 swing arm robot and second generation EcoLCC color changer. On top of all this our teams have improved or optimized established products such as spray booth conveyor systems and the new servo drives for sealing operations.
What more might come?
We are driving progress on sustainability and efficiency ever forward but are quite deliberately resisting tying ourselves to specific values. Currently, we can reach an energy consumption of 430 kWh per body. But even this figure is not set in stone. For us it means we ensure’ that Dürr always supplies the best possible “Eco+Paintshop” to suit each customer’s individual needs. Looking to the future, we are therefore also highlighting greater ease of equipment servicing as well as lower maintenance products and systems. These aspects, too, are part and parcel of our Eco+Efficiency System.
