High flexibility and short start-up period
June 2013 – Dürr’s Italian colleagues from CPM are building an assembly shop for Fiat in Melfi, Italy. In using Dürr standard products like a Flex Decking Line or the overhead conveyor TTS (Twin Trolley System) Fiat will get a very short installation and start-up period. Furthermore the extremely high flexibility and automation level of Dürr’s products allow the customer to produce different car models at the same time in the same line.
In the new assembly shop, that replaces the previous one, Fiat will build their models 500X, Grande Punto and Chrysler’s Jeep CUV. The high flexibility of the lines gives the customer the possibility to change the production mix quickly and react to the market need on demand.
Part of CPM’s range of supply is a FAStplant® pilot line. This reproduces Fiat’s globally applicable production standard in a compact design. FAStplant® is Dürr’s modular final assembly system with simple and flexible build-up and retrofitting options. The pretested and preassembled modules significantly reduce the start-up-time and allow a complete new line build-up. This system is also easy to adapt to new vehicle models or model variants and it has no dependence on the building.
The centerpiece of the chassis line is the overhead conveyor Twin Trolley System (TTS), a proprietary development of CPM, with height adjustable and rotating hangers. CPM will also install a new Flex Decking Line for joining the body and power train in the marriage station. Also included are mechanical dress-up lines, for instance for the front and rear axle modules.
Even end-of-line equipment with the x-wheel laser wheel alignment stand is part of the scope of services delivered by Dürr, as it is the x-road testing technology, with rolling, braking and ABS test facilities. In the end the equipment for shower testing, as well as the roller bed for the painted car body storage, are all part of the scope of services.
In August 2014 Fiat will take this flexible assembly shop in Melfi into operation. Fiat and CPM will benefit in this project from further experiences out of similar projects executed together in Pomigliano, Italy, in Kragujevac, Serbia, and in Changsha, China.
