Precise conveyor technology for complex oil spray system
Bietigheim-Bissingen, December 2014 – The part-by-part process (pbp) is gaining importance for vehicle manufacturing in the automotive industry. This process is used, for example, to manufacture body shell parts in Germany and ship them to other continents for final assembly. Prior to being transported, the body parts have to be preserved. For this purpose, Dürr has built a unique oil spray system with complex conveyor technology for a German OEM.
Before the sensitive sheet-metal parts embark on their long journey, they must be provided with corrosion protection to stop them from rusting. This is essential to ensure that they withstand the stresses of transportation, e.g. condensation in the container due to different climatic zones, or salty sea air. The best method of preservation is to apply oil to the individual parts.
To preserve the small parts, an international Dürr team has built an oil spray system including conveyor and process technology. Now two air recirculation units, a new filtering system and floor tray heating with hot water ensure optimum conditions. A 1,000 m2 steel platform has been constructed, consisting of 107 tons of steel with 243 meters of protective screen. The system was put into operation in fall 2014 and is located at a logistics company in Bremen, near the seaport.
The preservation of the body shell parts takes place in a large hall specially reserved for the German OEM. The parts are boxed and sent from all of its national plants to Bremen, where they are unpacked, oiled and repacked. Dürr's wealth of experience in conveyor and process technology has helped to master this complex logistics process. After all, the parts from box A have to find their way back into box A via different conveyor routes once they have been preserved.
It sounds simple, but in a process that relies on maximum automation and is time-critical, this is a real challenge. In addition, the preservation of the sheet-metal parts must be perfectly adapted to the processes of the logistics company to ensure that none of the boxes miss the overseas journey. For this purpose, Dürr has developed and programmed a new IT system for the control of the spray system and the communication and storage of the production and logistics data.
