Electricity generation from waste heat, cogeneration, and exhaust-air purification

Bietigheim-Bissingen, May 2014 – Trendsetting and award-winning technologies with excellent energy efficiency were presented by the Clean Technology Systems business unit at the Open House event. These technologies improve the efficiency of processes in many areas of application.

Energy-efficient RTO exhaust-gas purification with heat recovery: Especially developed for the purification of pollutant and odor-laden exhaust air from waste water treatment plants at chemical parks, Dürr's Regenerative Thermal Oxidation (RTO) is a particularly efficient and flexible solution. RTO systems burn the pollutants at up to 1000 °C. The amount of additional primary energy required for this is extremely low, as 95 % of the energy needed to preheat the exhaust gas is recovered. 

RTO systems can be flexibly designed for a number of different emission scenarios. Dürr offers systems for exhaust-air volumes from 3,000 Nm3/h to over 100,000 Nm3/h.

Ecopure KPR for exhaust-air purification in spray booths: Dürr has optimized this system to ensure that it is perfectly compatible with the EcoDryScrubber spray booth. The exhaust air, which has already been concentrated in the EcoDryScrubber, is passed from the spray booth to the Ecopure KPR. There the pollutants are adsorbed from the concentrated exhaust air and the exhaust air from the spray booth is thus cleaned. The pollutants adsorbed in the KPR system are continuously desorbed using heated fresh air. The volume flow of the desorption air is up to 30 times lower than the exhaust-air flow from the spray booth, which means the Ecopure KPR has a highly compact design. As a result, customers benefit from reduced investment costs and lower energy consumption.

Ecopure TAR for exhaust-air purification with heat recovery: The Ecopure TAR recuperative thermal exhaust-air purification process is a proven, safe and universally applicable incineration method, whereby organic pollutants are transformed mainly into water and carbon dioxide. It meets the increasingly stringent legal requirements. The plants maintain their high removal efficiency throughout their lifetime. The systems can run fully automatically and require only minimum maintenance.

The Ecopure TAR recuperative thermal exhaust-air purification process is the most suitable method to be applied when process exhaust air has to be purified and process heating is provided at the same time using a downstream heat exchanger.

ORC electricity generation from waste heat offers new possibilities for modernizing cogeneration plants: Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) systems generate electricity by means of an evaporation process using heat that previously went unused at temperatures ranging between 90 °C and 600 °C. This makes them a key technology for improving the efficiency of decentralized energy supply.

The technology offers new possibilities, for example, for modernizing existing cogeneration plants, which become considerably more efficient when combined with ORC. This leads to a substantial reduction in operating costs and a very good return on investment, e.g. for cogeneration plants that are fuelled by sewage gas.

Highly efficient CPS micro gas turbines for generating heat and electricity: The Compact Power System (CPS) is a small, highly efficient power plant that employs micro gas turbine technology to generate both heat and electricity. It can use fuels such as natural gas, biogas and biomass as well as mine, sewage or landfill gas which are burnt while keeping pollutant emissions to a minimum. Electricity can also be generated from low calorific gas, e.g. from biogas processing.

CPS is the ideal solution for operators with a continuous electricity and heat demand, for example companies in the food or beverage industry as well as supply and disposal operations, waste water treatment plants or utility companies.

High-temperature heat pumps, chillers and compressed air refrigerant dryers with the climate-friendly refrigerant CO2: The thermeco₂ HHR/HHS series offered by thermea Energiesysteme include high-temperature heat pumps up to 90 °C for heat recovery of up to 1,100 kW, and chillers down to -10 °C with complete high-temperature heat recovery of up to 90 °C. The machines are particularly suitable for manufacturing applications and building services, and offer short payback periods. They are available with extended operating limits and flow temperatures of up to 110 °C.

The thermeco₂ ADR/ADS series use the natural refrigerant CO₂. They comprise refrigerant dryers for compressed air systems with high-temperature heat recovery of up to 90 °C and dryer capacities from 4,100 to 68,500 Nm³/h. The machines are particularly suitable for manufacturing applications and offer short payback periods. The refrigerant dryers finance themselves entirely through the heat recovery option.
